Katie Haneke

Registered Dietitian

It isn’t surprising that navigating food and how to nourish oneself has become confusing for many individuals with all of the information (and mis/disinformation) out there these days. In addition, there are so many messages telling us that we cannot trust our body. Though these messages can become really engrained, with support, time, and lots of compassion I believe it is possible to foster a more peaceful way of interacting with food and our body.

I strive to prioritize safety through a trauma-informed approach to care. I aim to create a caring, non-judgmental environment where clients are encouraged to show up as their authentic selves to share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences and feel seen and supported. I believe in the importance of meeting an individual where they are at, and offer a collaborative approach where clients are encouraged to be an active participant in their care. I celebrate the fact that each individual and their body is unique, and work with clients to create a care plan that aligns with their needs and values.

I work with clients to rebuild trust with their body and heal their relationship with food through a non-diet, weight-inclusive approach. I help clients to challenge thoughts, beliefs, and rules around food, eating, and their body that aren’t serving them so that they can focus more on the things that bring them joy.

  •  I am a mom and a cat mom.
  • One of my favourite quotes is:“I have been silently waiting for someone else to tell me that it’s okay for me to fully love & accept myself, but, my love, it turns out that the permission I have been waiting for was my own. I’ve always just been waiting for myself.” -Stephanie Chinn
  •  I love animals, and have a particular fondness toward sea turtles. One of my dreams in life is to watch sea turtles hatch and make their way to the ocean.

Katie's experience:
I completed both a bachelor’s degree in Applied Human Nutrition and a combined master’s degree and dietetic internship program at The University of Guelph. I have over 12 years of experience as a Registered Dietitian, and am registered in good-standing with the College of Dietitians of Ontario. I worked in a community setting for many years, where I supported a diverse range of individuals at various stages of life. It was during this time that I developed an interest in eating disorder care and started down the path that led me to The Balanced Practice.

  • For me I find comfort being in nature, that's where I feel most grounded and most like myself. I believe that nature connects all living beings and we can all tune into it no matter where we are.
  • My favourite quote: “Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light. Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing we’ll ever do.” ― Brené Brown

More than just work

What do I like most about working at The Balanced Practice:
I love the supportive environment created amongst the team. I learn from my teammates all the time, and use the knowledge and insights I gain from them to continue to make changes to how I practice in an effort to offer the best care possible to my clients. I also love that we get to laugh together and connect on a more personal level. I feel appreciated as a professional and as a human.
What influences my work:
I am fully bilingual and French is my first language. I identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community.I have always been a person who has been interested in better understanding our minds, thoughts, emotions, and experiences. This interest became stronger and more pronounced after struggling with an eating disorder for over 10 years of my life and having to navigate the road to recovery. I believe that my lived experience with an ED has contributed to a better understanding of eating disorders from a clinical perspective as well as empathy and understanding of the challenges that ensue.

The Balanced Practice has evolved to a team of registered dietitians and therapists on a mission to support folks in finding their perfect balance between food, body and mind. We believe that we cannot talk about food without addressing our mindset, beliefs and emotions. We work with our clients to help them walk away from diets, recover from their eating disorder and learn to reconnect to themselves  so they can live their fullest life.

Our approach is weight inclusive, sexuality & gender affirming, trauma-informed and anti diet culture. We firmly believe that health is not reserved for any body type and that your recovery is possible.

the balanced practice?

Why

The Balanced Practice was created to fill the gap & INNOVATE THE WAY ED TREATMENT IS DONE.

The Balanced Practice is a place where you can be seen for you are, supported without judgement and empowered with evidence based & Lived Experience informed personalized treatment.

Because life is too short to struggle with your relationship with food & your body.

The Balanced Practice was founded by Marie-Pier, who after struggling with an eating disorder, noticed a gap in our healthcare system. Through her recovery, she noticed that treatment was often not inclusive, non collaborative or client centered and often offered only short term support.
